Altizier, Reuben Ireland Papers (1908-1984) SCOPE AND CONTENT Reuben Ireland Altizier was born in Roanoke, Virginia on August 3, 1908. He went to the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind and graduated in 1925. Reuben Altizier was admitted to Gallaudet College's Preparatory Class in 1925 and received a B.A. Degree in 1930. He had worked many years as a linotype operator in different places during different periods; The Star Democrat, the University of Virginia, and the U.S. Government Printing Office. The Reuben Altizier Collection consists of personal mementos dating from 1925-1980. The collection includes patches from the American Athletic Association of the Deaf, a collection of manual alphabet cards from different countries, and one certificate from the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind. He wrote some articles about his trip to Russia and the deaf people he met there. Mr. Altizier also gave a speech about some aspects of deaf history. For many years, Mr. Altizier had worked for the Virginia Association of the Deaf and also served as President of the V.A.D. In Dr. Schuchman's collection of videotapes, there is a videotape about Reuben I. Altizier's life. It was made in 1981. |
