Skyberg, Victor O. Papers (1890-1944)

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Victor Oliver Skyberg was born in 1890 in Sioux City, Iowa. He went to Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota in 1904, and graduated from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota in 1911. During his year at St. Olaf, he became acquainted with Deaf people of the neighboring state schools for the Deaf ‑ North and South Dakota and Iowa. Their friendship grew and Victor Skyberg was encouraged to study teaching at Gallaudet College. He studied there for one year and graduated with an M.A. degree in 1912. He went to the New York Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and taught for three years. In 1915, President Hall of Gallaudet College offered him a teaching position in Latin and natural science, which he accepted. He resigned as professor in 1928 to accept the position of Superintendent at the Minnesota School for the Deaf. In 1932, he moved back to the New York Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf as its Superintendent when he was called into active service by the U.S. Army and activated as major until 1942. He died suddenly on December 12, 1944 at Hoff General Hospital in Santa Barbara, California.

The Victor Oliver Skyberg Collection consists of material relating to his college work. The collection contains approximately 300 items dating from the 1910's.
