Biographical Sketch

1874-        Herbert Merrill was born in Waseca, Minnesota

1881-         Became Deaf due to scarlet fever

1881-      Graduated from Minnesota School for the Deaf

1896-         Was valedictorian for his class at Gallaudet College

1896-   Worked for United States Weather Bureau as meteorologist (19 years of service).

1897-         Married to Miss Emma Vail, and to this union two daughters were born.

1904-         Got his Masters of Art from Gallaudet College

1912-   Ordained as Deacon

1915-         Appointed missionary to Deaf in Diocese of Washington D.C., Virginia, West Virginia.

1919-        Was called missionary in Albany, Central, Rochester, and Western, New York.

1941-        Was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Gallaudet    College.

1943-       Retired as Deacon

1945-    Passed away on December 28th.



 

Scope and Content

Papers of Rev. Herbert C. Merrill collection contain one box. The collection, which consists of approximately 150 papers, is dated from 1897-1957. The collection includes each typed letters, program books, pamphlets, and letters between him and some of his deacons. The information is available to the public.
