Biographical Sketch

Kathleen Troncone Seymour was born January 31, 1951, and graduated from Gallaudet University in 1975.  She served as treasurer for the Maryland Association of the Deaf as well as the Washington Metropolitan Deaf Alliance.

Scope and Content

The papers of Kathleen Seymour consists of 2 document boxes for a total of 1 linear foot and approximately 1,700 pages.  The materials within the collection range from 1978 to 1985 with the majority of content from 1979-1982.

The bulk of the papers are lists, newsletters, and materials relating to the WMDA.  The strongest component of the collection is lists.  Lists of various organizations that serve the Deaf, contact lists of people to write to and lobby for equal access for the Deaf, and other simple directories pertaining to the objectives of the WMDA.  The weakest part of the collection is minutes.  The WMDA was periodically inactive due to increased accessibility for telecommunications for the Deaf, legislative processes, and closed-captioning—this caused the necessity of the organization to diminish until it was dissolved in 1986.

Documents range from agendas from the Maryland Association of the Deaf (MAD) and the Washington Metropolitan Deaf Alliance (WMDA); business correspondence; various lists that contain local contact information for people and services for the Deaf, as well as organization member lists; newsletters that discuss Deafnet, Telecommunications for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Inc. (TDI), and television captioning; press releases primarily from the National Captioning Institute; proposals for Deafnet, Telecommunications, and captioning; and finally, reports from a few committee members of the WMDA and MAD and progress made regarding Deafnet, captioning, and communications systems for the Deaf.  Most of the materials pertain to the WMDA.
