Biographical Sketch

Howard Tracy Hofsteater was born on November 22, 1909 in Talladega, Alabama.  He was a student at the Alabama School for the Deaf for 5 years.  He entered Gallaudet College in 1924 and graduated in 1930 with a B. A. degree.  After his graduation from Gallaudet, he taught at the Michigan School for the Deaf.  He then served as a teacher at the American School for the Deaf from 1934 to 1938.  In 1947 he began teaching at the Illinois School for the Deaf where he continued until his death on September 25, 1964.

     

Scope and Content

The Howard Tracy Hofsteater Collection consists of approximately 850 items dating from 1930 to 1959.  The majority of his papers date from the 1930's to 1940's.  The bulk of the collection consists of articles, letters, poem and writings.

The folder of letters to his wife Marie P. Hofsteater is arranged chronologically. Included in the folders labeled to "writings" papers by Mr. Hofsteater related to different subjects among them deaf education.  It is arranged alphabetically by title.
