Biographical Sketch
Herbert Draper Gallaudet was Edward Miner
Gallaudet’s youngest son. His middle name came from Amos G. Draper, who was a
friend of E.M. Gallaudet. He was born in Washington, DC on September 12, 1876.
He attended the Friends School and graduated from Yale University. Gallaudet
married Elizabeth Young and had one daughter, Ellen, in 1911. He studied for the
ministry in New England and in 1912, he became the pastor of the First
Congregational Church in Waterbury, Connecticut where he served until he retired
in 1938. He served as an Army captain during World War I. He died in Pine
Orchard, Connecticut in 1944.
Scope and Content
The papers of Herbert D. Gallaudet consist primarily of his creative works: plays, verses, poetry, and a manuscript based on his experiences in World War I. He wrote a manuscript entitled “We Went to War” which is composed primarily of verses related to the war. Also included are play books and clippings of stories from magazines. Of particular interest in this collection is a book of religious poetry that belonged to E.M. Gallaudet. This collection is dated from 1853 to 1941, but most works are from 1937 to 1941.
